  • Jamal Khashoggi: Turkey's Erdogan urges Saudi Arabia to release images

The case surrounding Jamal Khashoggi, the missing Washington Post columnist who disappeared after entering a Saudi consulate in Istanbul, raised more concerns after mounting evidence suggested he was murdered. Bob Corker, who as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has reviewed USA intelligence on the case, said it was likely that Khashoggi was killed the day he walked into the consulate. But he said the U.S.is demanding answers: "We're demanding everything, we want to see what's going on here". He also said the USA. was working "very closely" with Turkey, "and I think we'll get to the bottom of it".

Tawakkol Karman, the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, holds a picture of missing Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi as she speaks to journalists near the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

United States intelligence officials reportedly intercepted communications that the Saudis discussed a plan to lure and capture Khashoggi before his disappearance, a person familiar with the situation said in The Post.

Donald Trump, the USA president, said he had raised Mr Khashoggi's case with Saudi Arabia "at the highest level" and a few times in recent days.

It was not clear, the report said, whether the Saudis meant to arrest and interrogate Mr. Khashoggi or to kill him, or if the US officials warned Mr. Khashoggi that he was a target.

Erdogan told reporters on a flight back from Hungary that Turkey is anxious about the Khashoggi's disappearance. Trump said that Khashoggi's fiancée had sent him a letter and may come to the White House soon.

Corker says, "the Saudis have a lot of explaining to do because all indications are that they have been involved at minimum with his disappearance".

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday evening that United States intelligence intercepts outlined a Saudi plan to detain Mr Khashoggi.

The Sabah newspaper, which is close to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, identified the team members, including several alleged security officials, and published photos of each of them, apparently taken at passport control.

The Trump administration is left with an awkward lack of information about a widely respected writer who had been living in self-imposed exile in the US for the past year after fleeing a crackdown on intellectuals and activists in Saudi Arabia.

Asked about the invitation, Cengiz told Turkish state broadcaster TRT on Thursday: "I am not thinking anything on this subject at the moment".

Khashoggi was also critical of the Saudi government-and he went into exile in the U.S.in 2017, fearing that he would be arrested as part of Prince Mohammad's crackdown on dissent.

"Now, they are waiting the final permission to enter the consulate", the official said, following an initial offer from Saudi authorities.

The Saudi ambassador to Washington, Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, has described the allegations as "malicious leaks and grim rumors" and said the kingdom is "gravely concerned" about Khashoggi.

The intelligence also poses a political problem for the Trump administration because it implicates Mohammed, who is close to Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, the Post reported.

The Post has obtained video of the areas surrounding the consulate that purportedly shows when Khashoggi arrived at the consulate, as well as the movements of vehicles leaving the consulate two hours later. "We have a country that's doing probably better economically than it's ever done before", Trump said. Relations were already strained after Turkey sent troops to the Gulf state of Qatar past year in a show of support after its Gulf neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, imposed an embargo on Doha. Corker said "everything points to them".

Turkey says it will conduct a search of the Istanbul consulate, while Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said the country was "open to co-operation" and a search of the building could go ahead.
