A day Michael made landfall as a deadly Category 4 hurricane, 10Weather is already monitoring a new tropical disturbance in the west-central Caribbean Sea.

The Associated Press reported that across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas, more than 800,000 customers were without power as of Thursday morning.

On Monday, NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer instrument captured Michael while still a Category 1.

Briefing President Donald Trump at the White House, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) chief Brock Long said Michael was the most intense hurricane to strike the Florida Panhandle since 1851. Bill Nelson, said a "wall of water" could cause destruction along the Panhandle.

"When the water came in, houses started floating in front of our home", he said.

"We need to be ready for this", NHC Director Ken Graham said in an update Tuesday morning, urging people in the storm's path to finish preparations and evacuate if they're in an emergency area.

Cameras outside the International Space Station captured video of Michael as the storm continued churning over the Gulf of Mexico.

Smith, in Gadsden County, said the situation was risky even for emergency personnel.

Asked why her family didn't leave, she said she thought they were safe on the fourth floor of a concrete building. It was the most powerful hurricane on record to hit the Panhandle.

Smith could not provide details on the victim.

The area is known for its small beach towns, wildlife reserves and the state capital, Tallahassee.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to reporters about the subject. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged the conflicting reports about the safety and whereabouts of Khashoggi.

General Terrence O Shaughnessy, commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command, said some Florida residents may have been surprised by the rapid growth of the storm.

But Michael's quick progress means it won't have a chance to trigger the same widespread, epic flooding as past slow-moving hurricanes such as Florence and Harvey, which unleashed seemingly endless rains after stalling and hovering inland.

"Where that becomes a factor is with the evacuation of some of the local populations", he said.

With the hurricane still pounding the state hours after it came ashore, and conditions too unsafe in places for search-and-rescue teams to go out, there were no further reports on deaths or injuries by nightfall. The storm is expected to make landfall by early afternoon.

Based on its internal barometric pressure, Michael was the third most powerful hurricane to hit the USA mainland, behind the unnamed Labor Day storm of 1935 and Camille in 1969.

P.S. Hurricane Michael is an extremely risky storm. It followed its predicted path with seeming obedience, but then burst into sudden fury as it approached the Florida Panhandle, reaching wind speeds at the cusp of Category 5 strength and leaving mud and rubble in its wake. "There's still stuff we don't know about hurricanes", Klotzbach said.

Floridians are just beginning to assess the damage left by Hurricane Michael and preparing for a hard period of recovery. But he said the sheriff told him it looked like a bomb had gone off.

"This situation has NEVER happened before", it said on Twitter.

Diane Farris, 57, and her son walked to a high school-turned-shelter near their home in Panama City to find about 1,100 people crammed into a space meant for about half as many. "I would have to say at least as long as it did for Hurricane Andrew, and that took months and months".

Governor Northam's state of emergency is aimed to reduce damage in the Commonwealth as much as possible while also mobilizing resources to assist other states.

Dock Street, the arty fishing town's main drag, was mostly spared, a stark contrast from the destruction from Hurricane Hermine in 2016, that slammed the island with a nine-foot storm surge.
