Soyuz rocket fails mid-air, two-man crew are alive

Two astronauts from the USA and Russia were forced to make an emergency landing after a Russian booster rocket carrying them into orbit to the International Space Station failed after launch.
The crew was scheduled to fly to the International Space Station and stay there for six months. The capsule's launch escape system pulled the crew away from the rocket seconds before the vehicle exploded.
The incident comes as the US has been making progress in its quest to end Russia's monopoly on manned flights to the ISS by encouraging private companies to conduct launches.
While the initial launch at 04:40am ET was successful, the problem with the booster soon became apparent.
It was to be Hague's first flight to the station, launching at 3:40 a.m. Thursday from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome. NASA is working closely with Roscosmos to ensure the safe return of the crew.
The pair was set to dock at the orbiting outpost six hours after launch, but the booster rocket failed minutes after launch. United States astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin were rescued without injuries in Kazakhstan.
