The quake in Papua raised the possibility of a local tsunami, although authorities said there was no significant tsunami threat to Hawaii or the wider Pacific region.

The preliminary magnitude 7.0 quake struck at 10:48 a.m. today at a depth of 24.5 miles and was centered 118 miles northeast of Kokopo, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

"We felt the natural disaster a bit, but it was not too strong,"Constable Roy Michael told Reuters by phone from Rabaul police station".

"A tsunami threat exists for parts of the pacific located closer to the natural disaster", the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said, but added more information was needed to assess if the risk radiated further.

It earlier warned that waves up to about 30 centimetres were possible within 300 kilometres of the epicentre.

Australia's Tsunami Warning Centre said its coastlines were not at risk.

Walsh said areas farther away are unlikely to be affected because the natural disaster isn't "terribly large" and many sites are shielded by land masses and islands.

In March, a magnitude-6.6 quake struck nearby with no casualties or damage reported.

The quake was initially recorded with a magnitude of 7.3 but was downgraded.

The country is still recovering after a 7.5-magnitude quake hit its mountainous interior in February, killing at least 125 people, cutting off access to villages and knocking out power.

It was followed by aftershocks of magnitude 5.7 and 5.9.

Some tourists and residents ducked outdoors as a precaution but then went back to sleep when there was no tsunami warning.

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, straddles the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide and numerous world's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
