Takeaways from the UN's Startling Climate Report

  • UN report on global warming carries life-or-death warning

Thanks to a poor winter and long-term drought, New Mexico's largest reservoir, Elephant Butte, is now at 3.2 percent capacity.

At 1.5 degrees of warming, compared with pre-industrial levels, as much as 90 per cent of the world's coral reefs will die, and virtually all would be lost if temperatures rose two degrees, or about twice the increase so far.

Established energy policies include the Clean Energy Fund, the Renewable Energy Target, the Emissions Reduction Fund, the Snowy Hydro 2.0 project and a forestry plan to plant one billion trees.

"His disrespect and dismissal of [the IPCC report] is outrageous and risky", Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.), the top Democrat on the House Subcommittee on the Environment, said in a phone interview.

He has long ignored or cast doubt on the scientific community's consensus that human activity is causing risky climate change, and has frequently exhibited a profound misunderstanding of the science behind it. The report also stated that 70-85 percent of energy needs to be supplied by renewable sources by 2050 to stay at the 1.5C target - right now, renewable energy accounts for about 25 percent.

The Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, ideally 1.5C, by the turn of the century will be extremely challenging.

The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report on Monday, Oct. 8th on the impact of climate change and the consensus was not good.

While the U.S.is on target to meet the previous goal, the United Nations is still stressing that more action is needed. Together, higher temperatures and precipitation changes will decrease soil moisture and increase drought. The IPCC report states that the hottest days of summer in mid-latitudes could increase by 4°C under a 2°C global increase, suggesting that heat waves here in southern BC could easily reach 44°C. President Trump has previously mocked the Paris Agreement and is actively trying to withdraw from it.

"When the federal government fails to act, we must look to states, cities, and the private sector to redouble their efforts", Udall added.

Earlier this year Governor Brown issued executive orders to improve the health of the state's forests and help mitigate the threat and impacts of wildfire, and get 5 million zero-emission vehicles onto California's roads by 2030. Scientists have said that climate change has worsened Michael and other recent storms, including the one that devastated Puerto Rico in 2017.

Politicians are fond of talking about what kind of future we will leave our grandchildren, but I can now say that having a grandchild sharpens that perspective dramatically. But it wasn't necessarily new.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment. They say it excludes scientists who downplay the effect of burning fossil fuels.

However, the IPCC report's authors said the world would face severe consequences if the great bulk of fossil fuels including coal, oil and gas, weren't left in the ground.

"But it has not been very easy to get support for carbon taxation and things like that because it is asking people in counties like ours to pay now for the benefit of those 50 years in the future as well as other parts of the world".

Decades ago, Congress refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, which represented the first step toward meaningful worldwide action on climate in 1992. The country is also 13th biggest emitter of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide). They serve as an example of the interconnectedness of climate change impacts, a characteristic that creates interacting, compounding negative effects.

All those initiatives and studies ended once Gov. Susana Martinez took office in January 2011.
