Liberty Media are poised to strike a deal for a Vietnam Grand Prix to be confirmed on the 2020 Formula 1 calendar.

A race in Vietnam would increase the number of races in Asia following the loss of the Malaysian Grand Prix, which dropped off the calendar this year.

Vietnam would be the first new race introduced by commercial rights holders Liberty Media, who took control in January a year ago and ousted former supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

SUZUKA, Japan (Reuters) - Plans for a Vietnamese Grand Prix in 2020 look feasible, according to Formula One race director Charlie Whiting who visited the proposed site in Hanoi last week.

The change put forward by Liberty Media would have seen the top 15 drivers score points rather than the top 10 that now leave a race with points towards the Drivers' Championship.

"There is no actual progress at building the track, but the site has been identified", Whiting said.

NOAA Says It’s Category 3 With 120 Mph Winds, Storm Surge
Rick Scott calls it a "monstrous hurricane" and is warning of a potentially devastating strike sometime Wednesday. A catastrophic event is expected on the Florida coast, where storm surges could reach 8-12 feet.

"I think, as far as I'm aware, they're aiming for a 2020 Grand Prix, which shouldn't be a problem based on previous experience".

"It's mainly on the streets and there's a section which is not yet built".

"It's an open site where the pit building's going to be built", he said. Part of the track will be built there, which doesn't exist at the moment.

Whiting added that Hanoi's circuit would include local roads as well as a purposely-built section. "But it will become a road after that".

However, it is uncertain whether F1's schedule shall be boosted beyond its current 21-race programme or whether existing races may fall off the calendar.
