It appears that Apple will, at least initially, use its TV app as a springboard. If any company could directly take on Netflix, it's Apple, which boasts a ton of money in hand.

Apple has been announcing press releases for some time about original TV series and films that it's developing, but for each major announcement, we still had no idea how Apple meant to release this content.

CNBC reports that upcoming Apple-funded TV shows will be available for free inside the pre-installed TV app on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV devices.

This new streaming video service will include content owned by Apple, which will be reportedly free for iOS and Apple TV customers via the TV app.

Why it matters: Apple's rumored original content strategy is a win-win no matter how you look at it.

CNBC reported that Apple plans on debuting the revamped TV app with original content and new features in "early 2019".

Apple's move to give away its original content may seem like not the smartest thing to do, but in actuality it's just doing what Apple has always done: provide great ancillary products-such as free video, photo, and music editing apps, free operating system updates, and even free office productivity tools, that are just another reason to buy Apple hardware. This is quite similar to how Amazon's streaming service works.

"Apple has made clear, say producers and agents, that it wants high-quality shows with stars and broad appeal, but it doesn't want gratuitous sex, profanity, or violence", the Journal reported. By creating a library of entirely family friendly content, Apple can stand apart from Netflix as something different.

Apple was reportedly among the first to explore the possibility of revolutionizing how we watch television but as we all know, that never materialized. Along with its free original content, Apple device owners will also get access to content from other services, through subscription-based "channels". The streaming wars have just begun.
