Soyuz rocket crew rescued after emergency landing

Such a landing is created to decelerate rapidly to bring the astronauts back to the ground, meaning it takes a steep angle of descent and can put the astronauts under extreme gravitational forces, up to eight times normal gravity, as Joe Pappalardo at Popular Mechanics reports.

The descent was sharper than usual meaning the crew was subjected to a greater G-force, but they have been prepared for this scenario in training, the commentator said.

Both the US space agency NASA and Russia's Roscosmos reported that the two were quickly recovered from the landing area by rescue crews.

The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, coordinated the launch, which had been planned for multiple years.

A terrifying video shows the moment that two crew members fear for their lives as they are jolted up and down in the cockpit.

Roscosmos, which oversees the Russian space program, tweeted a photo of Hague and Ovchinin being examined in Zhezkazgan.

The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said there was an issue with the spacecraft's booster after it took off Thursday from the Soviet-era cosmodrome in Baikonur, Kazakhstan.

A state commission set up by Roscosmos to investigate the cause of the incidence is already hard at work assessing telemetry.

The Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft carrying the crew of astronaut Nick Hague of the USA and cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin of Russian Federation blasts off to the International Space Station (ISS) from the launchpad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan October 11, 2018.

Manned space launches have been suspended pending an investigation.

The incident comes as the USA has been making progress in its quest to end Russia's monopoly on manned flights to the ISS by encouraging private companies to conduct launches. Russian space agency Roscosmos confirmed several minutes later that Hague and Ovchinin had been forced to abort the launch and escape the failing booster in the Soyuz capsule.

The journey was expected to take six hours.

Russian Federation may indefinitely postpone its next manned Soyuz launch planned for December, state-owned RIA Novosti reported, citing an unidentified person.

A transport plane dropped a team of paratroopers to the site to make first contact with the crew, while helicopters were dispatched to pick up the astronauts.

The future of the International Space Station is uncertain now, however, because this Russian rocket was the only way to get people to the station - and now it's under investigation.

The crew launched at 12:40 (UAE time) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Shortly after launch, there was an anomaly with the booster and the launch ascent was aborted, resulting in a ballistic landing of the spacecraft.

Russian and USA space officials said that the crew is heading for an emergency landing in Kazakhstan at an unspecified time. NASA has Soyuz seats booked until November 2019, after which it hopes to use private US companies such as SpaceX and Boeing to ferry its astronauts up and down. When Soyuz 33 suffered an engine failure before docking with the orbiting outpost, it not only deprived the Salyut 6 crew of additional members, but called into question the reliability of their own identical spacecraft. The space agency recently announced the nine astronauts that will crew the test flights and first missions of the SpaceX Crew Dragon and Boeing CST-100 Starliner spacecraft. The derivative has been transporting crews to the space station since coming into service in 2001, conducting 55 successful flights in 17 years.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have sunk to post-Cold War lows over the crisis in Ukraine, the war in Syria and allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential vote, but they have maintained co-operation in space research.
