A recent USA air strike in Somalia killed about 60 Al-Shabaab militants in the largest strike against the group in almost a year, the US military said on Tuesday.

"We now assess this airstrike killed approximately 60 terrorists", US Africa Command which oversees US military operations on the continent said in a statement.

"We now assess this airstrike killed approximately sixty (60) terrorists", said the statement. The airstrike, conducted Friday, was the largest against the al Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab in almost a year, when US forces killed about 100 extremists in an attack on one of their camps.

The US military has carried out more than two dozen air strikes, including drone strikes, this year against the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab.

The statement added that Africa Command now assesses that no civilians were killed or injured in the strike.

Somalia on Sunday marked the first anniversary of al-Shabab's deadliest attack, a truck bombing in Mogadishu that killed well over 500 people.

In March of 2017, President Donald Trump authorized the United States military to carry out precision strikes targeting al-Shabaab in an effort to bolster the Federal Government of Somalia.
