The FA has called on the police and social media firms to do more to tackle online abuse after England and Chelsea midfielder Karen Carney was subjected to rape and death threats.

The FA called on Instagram and the police to act. What can I say about the situation?

The Metropolitan Police said it "takes allegations of threatening and abusive behaviour very seriously" and encourages any victims of such crimes to contact police so an investigation can be carried out.

Carney received the abuse after Chelsea's Champions League win over Fiorentina on Wednesday with the Instagram user posting rape and death threats against the 31-year-old player.

He shared a further post on Friday directed towards an unnamed England Women worldwide, which included a rape threat and a follow-up message suggesting it was "headline" grabbing.

In response to the abuse, Carney, who has 133 global caps, wrote: "Wow some people".

If this looks familiar, chances are you've already seen it on Veep , back from the time that Ryan chose to run for Congress. According to Mediaite , an eagle-eyed Twitter user was first to point out the striking similarities.

Neville called the messages "absolutely disgraceful" and also later asked Instagram: "Are you going to do something about it?"

This provoked a strong response from the English Football Association (FA) and England national women's team coach Phil Neville. "We are appalled and dismayed by the abuse directed towards Karen Carney on social media", read a statement.

He added on Friday: "Another disgraceful bad despicable message sent to one of my @lionesses - @instagram can you do a better job at protecting my players who use your social media platform!"

"We provide all our senior England players with training, guidance and support on the use of social media and treat our duty of care in this regard with the utmost importance".

A spokesperson for Instagram told British media: "We do not tolerate threatening or abusive behaviour, and the account that sent these messages has been removed from Instagram".
