This week, a report from The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) claimed that Facebook has internally blamed the attack on spammers.

The incident has been under investigation since September 25, when Facebook's security team discovered someone downloading a large amount of digital access tokens from the social platform.

Rosen said in a statement that in the coming days, Facebook would send customised messages to the 30 million people affected by security breach to explain the how to know the information the attackers might have accessed.

"We have not ruled out the possibility of smaller-scale attacks, which we are continuing to investigate". Once that vulnerability was exploited, the attackers could steal the access tokens used to let people use their accounts without having to log in every time to do so.

It had also notified the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, Congressional aides and the Data Protection Commission in Ireland, where the company has European headquarters. The attackers also used a technique that let them steal access tokens from the friends of the accounts they already controlled, expanding their reach.

Facebook said it was conducting an internal investigation into the incident and last week cut the number of affected users from its original estimate after investigators reviewed activity on accounts that may have been affected.

In the hack, 15 million people had their name and contact details (phone number, email, or both, depending on what people had on their profiles) accessed.

Facebook has said it's working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which asked it not to discuss who might be behind the attack or whether they were targeting anyone in particular.

On top of that, a further 14 million users had other details like gender, locale/language, relationship status, and religion retrieved, on top of the previous data.

"For one million people, the attackers did not access any information", he said.
