British Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary has been released from prison, the Press Association reported.

Choudary, 51, was convicted in 2016 after being caught swearing an oath of allegiance to Islamic State or Iraq and the Levant and served just half of his sentence.

Choudary, a solicitor from Ilford in east London, once described jobseeker's allowance as "jihad seeker's allowance" and urged his followers to claim it.

"At the end of the day, he is a pathetic groomer of others", Rowley said.

Choudary has been released as he has reached the halfway point of his five-and-a-half-year sentence - as time he spent on remand was counted.

For the rest of the sentence period, he will be subject to a strict supervision regime, with around 25 licence conditions.

Police and MI5 are expected to be among a host of agencies involved in monitoring him in the community.

From here he was driven at high speed in a convoy of unmarked police vehicles to a bail hostel in north London, arriving at 6.29am on Friday.

In addition, he will be subject to a unique list of further measures while on licence.

Mattis and his Chinese counterpart to meet following canceled talks
Beijing appears ready to normalize its interactions with the American military, a USA defense official said Wednesday, after relations soured during a sanctions spat and trade war.

He is expected to wear an electronic tag, face a night-time curfew, and be barred from contacting anyone who has been charged with extremist-related offences unless he receives prior approval from authorities.

In addition, Choudary's name has been added to a United Nations sanctions list, which means the government can freeze his assets and bar him from travelling.

"This includes the setting of strict licence conditions, such as restrictions on movement and internet access and stringent curfews, the breach of which could result in immediate recall to prison".

Last week, security minister Ben Wallace said: "We are alert to the threat people like him pose and we will make sure we do what steps we need to mitigate it".

Over 20 years he voiced controversial views on Sharia law, while building up a following of thousands through social media, demonstrations and lectures around the world.

Following his conviction two years ago, it was reported that police had referred his activities to the Crown Prosecution Service on 10 occasions between 2002 and 2015, without charges being brought.

He was pictured at a protest with Michael Adebolajo, later convicted of the violent murder of British soldier Lee Rigby, and he was linked to Siddhartha Dhar, suspected by authorities of replacing Mohammed Emwazi, or "Jihadi John", as ISIS executioner.

There is no suggestion Choudary organised any attacks.
