  • India’s R&AW trying to kill me says Sri Lankan President Sirisena

"PM Modi does not mind the SLPDA (Sri Lanka Ports Development Authority) developing it single-handedly", Sirisena recalled during a heated exchange with Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the weekly cabinet meeting in Colombo on Tuesday.

"So far, what we have is the figment of someone's imagination of an assassination plot", the source said. Following his poll defeat in 2015, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa held RAW among those responsible for the change in regime.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told President Maithripala Sirisena that India wouldn't mind if it is not involved in the development of the eastern terminal of the Colombo Port, the Sri Lankan leader has claimed. Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera slammed it as a "disinformation campaign", urging reporters to be responsible.

On Wednesday, government spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said the cabinet had approved a new proposal for 28,000 houses worth 35.8 billion rupees ($210 million) to be built by Indian firm ND Enterprises and two Sri Lankan firms in the north and east.

The Lankan Foreign Ministry termed the report as "baseless and false". That is often the case.

When Meghan Markle visited Bondi Beach on Friday morning, fashionistas were quick to size up the Duchess of Sussex's shoes. But, being the professional she is, she added she's doing "pretty well so far".

"The President of Sri Lanka stated that he categorically rejected the reports in sections of media about him alluding to the involvement of India in any manner whatsoever in an alleged plot to assassinate the President and a former Defence Secretary of Sri Lanka", said the MEA press release.

According to the media reports, Sirisena said he was unhappy with the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inquiry into the plot and faulted the law and order minister for what he called the very slow progress of the inquiry.

The Hindu, on Tuesday evening, spoke to multiple sources in government - across political parties - who attended the meeting, and they confirmed this. Reportedly, the president told his Cabinet about this.

Embarrassing headlines have dogged Mr Sirisena in recent weeks. However the PM said that Colombo had already promised New Delhi on collaborating on the project. He said at the meeting that he would get some clarity on the issue after his meeting with Narendra Modi.

The alleged plot first emerged in late September after a police informant called Namal Kumara published a telephone recording between him and a senior police officer where he said there was a plan to kill Sirisena. Asked if it was connected to Mr. Sirisena's reported remarks at the Cabinet, he said: "No, it had nothing to do with that".
