School cook adds kangaroo meat to chili

A school cook in Nebraska was sacked this week after secretly serving kangaroo meat mixed into beef chili at Potter-Dix Public Schools, according to a report.

They also said that it would have been approved by USDA inspectors - but Williams assured parents it will not be served again.

School officials have said that they do not believe kangaroo meat is unhealthy or unsafe.

Frei, according to KSID radio, was sacked on Wednesday afternoon.

"I've heard reports of that, but like I said our statement is our statement".

Head cook Kevin Frei obtained the kangaroo meat from Sysco, which is the No. 1 distributor of food to school cafeterias in the United States, Sandhills Express reported.

"2. If we were to have food or ingredients that are out of the ordinary, they should be listed on the menu so that the students and families are aware of what they would be being served".

The district did not include where the kangaroo meat was purchased from.

Mr Williams said he did not believe kangaroo meat was unhealthy or risky, but emphasised the fact it was not a normal staple of the school community's diet.

While it's unknown the extent of the illnesses and whether or not they were brought on by the meal, Potter-Dix Superintendent Mike Williams fielded several complaints from concerned parents. "We will make sure that something like this never occurs again".

Kangaroo meat is mostly produced in Australia and is sourced from wild animals as part of the country's population control programs.

This week chargrilled kangaroo was on the menu when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Melbourne during their Australian tour.
