U.S. President Donald Trump praised a Republican congressman for body-slamming a reporter past year, calling him a "tough cookie" and saying he thinks it might have helped him win election in Montana.

"Let me just say on behalf of all of Montana, Mr. President, thank you for giving us hope again", Gianforte said, while at a rally in Missoula, Montana.

"By the way, never wrestle him", Trump said, referring to Gianforte's assault on The Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs. He went on to defeat his Democratic opponent.

Fox News reporters who witnessed the attack later recalled: "Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him". "And then I said, well, wait a minute".

"I think it might help him, and it did", Trump said to applause from the 4,000 rally attendees. The judge called Gianforte's actions "totally unacceptable" but gave him a six-month deferred sentence.

Trump did not, however, note Gianforte eventually pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and was mandated to attend anger management classes, along with having to fork over payment for a fine.
