Turkish authorities are conducting a separate investigation from Saudi's probe.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, which is running the investigation, released a statement yesterday underlining that their investigations were complying with all relevant worldwide and national norms.

All of the samples will be taken to analyse for traces of Khashoggi's DNA.

Trump, who has forged closer ties with Saudi Arabia and the 33-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, acknowledged for the first time on Thursday that Khashoggi, a USA resident and Washington Post columnist, had likely been killed.

Saudi security official Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb was the leader of the alleged team.

Allen noted that Pompeo continues to call the situation a "disappearance", not a murder, despite US intelligence likely possessing its own evidence of exactly what happened to Khashoggi.

Khashoggi's killers may have dumped his remains in Belgrad Forest adjacent to Istanbul, and at a rural location near the city of Yalova, a 90-kilometre drive south of Istanbul, the officials said. He has not been seen since he stepped inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday it "certainly looks" like U.S. -based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is dead.

Mr Pompeo said the Saudis should be given a few more days to finish and make public a credible investigation before the United States decides "how or if" to respond.

Trump said that he has spoken to the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the kingdom continues to steadfastly deny any involvement in Khashoggi's suspected murder.

The President's remarks came hours after he had a detailed meeting with Pompeo, who a night earlier arrived from his trip to Saudi Arabia and Turkey, where he talked to them about the missing journalist.

In what the Post called his last piece for the newspaper, Khashoggi drew criticism on the Middle East's lack of a free press.

They include top business executives, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, European cabinet ministers, International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim.

The Committee to Protect Journalists, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Reporters Without Borders said at a news conference at United Nations headquarters that Turkey should request that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres initiate a transparent investigation. The official added Pompeo had warned him that it would be "very hard for you to be a credible king" without a credible investigation.
