Kyle Lafferty has apologised to Rangers boss Steven Gerrard for failing to follow protocol in his withdrawal from the Northern Ireland squad.

The Irish FA were unhappy that Lafferty pulled out of the squad for the matches against Austria and Bosnia Herzegovina on 12 and 15 October in a phone call, saying he had an Achilles problem.

"It's a shame because he's a good player and he's been in good form since he came in".

"But we respect and appreciate what's gone on".

"I support him, of course I do". I always support my players 100 per cent.

In a rare move, Northern Ireland used a Federation Internationale de Football Association rule which prohibits a player who fails to report for his country turning out for his club within five days of the closure of the global window.

Northern Ireland lost both matches during the global window and, since the row broke out, Lafferty has attempted to build bridges with manager Michael O'Neill and has confirmed he still wants to represent his country.

"That's none of my business to be brutally honest", he said. "He looks passionate. He looks like he loves it".

"He's made it clear he wants to continue to play and be available but that's a conversation between himself and Michael that he will have to thrash out".

They have evoked FIFA's five-day rule which stresses that players who do not arrive for global duty can not play for their clubs within a short period.

As well as Lafferty, Gerrard will also be without midfielder Scott Arfield and full-back Borna Barisic for Sunday's Premiership game at Accies after the pair picked up knocks on global duty with Canada and Croatia respectively.
