The UN peacekeeping mission said its troops exchanged fire with rebels on Saturday in the Mayangose area of the city as civilians were attacked.

Aid groups have expressed alarm after the insecurity and sometimes hostile community resistance led the rate of new cases to more than double.

Meanwhile, the ministry said that two agents of the Rapid Medical Unit of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) died Saturday after an attack by local militias and the agents were placed at certain points of entry into hazardous areas to assist national border health officers.

A deadly rebel attack against civilians in Beni late last month forced the suspension of Ebola containment efforts for days, and the effects are still being seen.

It appeared to be the first time health workers have been killed by rebels in this outbreak, which is taking place in what has been compared to a war zone.

Confirmed Ebola cases in the latest outbreak have now reached 200, including 117 deaths, since it was declared on 1 August.

"Health agents are not a target for armed groups", Health Minister Oly Ilunga said Saturday.

New cases of Ebola have more than doubled since then, with numerous new confirmed cases reported in the city.

Health workers have described hearing gunshots daily, operating under the armed escort of United Nations peacekeepers or Congolese security forces.

The Ebola virus containment work has just been reopened after being suspended a few weeks ago in the wake of a similar attack by the ADF.

A pair of Red Cross volunteers were severely injured in a confrontation with wary community members in a region traumatised by decades of fighting and facing an Ebola outbreak for the first time.

A soldier from the Armed Forces of the Democratic republic of the Congo is seen on patrol to hold off attacks from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels on October 06 outside Oicha.

"They are true heroes and we will continue to take all necessary measures so that they can do their job safely".

Following a recent meeting of the Emergency Committee of the International Health Regulations in Geneva, the World Health Organization said the tenth Ebola outbreak in DRC does not now constitute a public health emergency of international concern. To warrant being declared a global emergency, an outbreak must be "an extraordinary event" that might cross borders, requiring a coordinated response.

Confirmed cases have been found near the heavily travelled border with Uganda.
