Thousands of would-be migrants are stranded on the border between Guatemala and Mexico, after Mexican police blocked their bid to reach the US.

During the week, in anticipation of the caravan's arrival at the southern border, the Mexican government deployed hundreds of National Police personnel there and issued a series of statements warning the caravan's participants against trying to enter the country illegally.

A large, USA -bound group of Central American migrants that President Donald Trump has been attacking all week reached Mexico's southern border Friday and started to cross over after a clash with law enforcement. Some violently shook fences.

The crowd then rushed across a long bridge that crosses the Suchiate River and connects Ciudad Tecún Umán with the Mexican town of Ciudad Hidalgo, coming to a stop at a high metal fence blocking the way into Mexico.

Leaders throughout the region have publicly urged them to turn back for days. But that would probably enrage Trump, who appears to see Mexico's responsibility as stopping migrants from reaching the USA border by any means.

By Thursday, the caravan had dispersed a bit, with the youngest and strongest of the migrants walking ahead together, some boarding buses or trying to hitch rides.

The migrants have no fresh supplies of water or food and slept amid garbage that has piled up at the crossing.

Selvin Flores, a 35-year-old shopkeeper from the Honduran city of Nacaome, said people who "were causing disorder" have been expelled from the group and handed over to Guatemalan police.

"There's nothing for us in our country", said Guerrero, who used to sell beans in Honduras.

Mexican television footage shows hundreds of migrants pushing through Guatemalan border posts and streaming onto a bridge connecting Mexico and Guatemala.

Another migrant, Jose Yanez, woke up at 5 a.m. Saturday and said that his back hurt. But the 25-year-old farmer was determined to press onward, explaining that the $6 a day he made back home was not enough to live on. He should be happy because we're going to work.

"One can not live back there", Vasquez said, standing next to the main border gate.

He said that he makes 150 lempiras a day, or about $6 USA, and has no work benefits. Later, he retweeted a video of Mexican federal police arriving at the Guatemalan border and wrote: "Thank you Mexico, we look forward to working with you!"

Thousands of other migrants are still waiting to cross, according to CNN teams at the scene.

"There's no reason to give them greater transcendence or importance", Videgaray said from the United Nations where he sought the world body's help processing asylum requests from the migrants.

The agency said camera operators monitoring movement Thursday afternoon along the US-Mexico border in the Yuma area captured images of a large number of people being dropped over the border wall east of the San Luis Port of Entry.
