This variety is more deep sea dwelling than most sea cucumbers, rarely seen at depths above 1,000 metres.

The creature, about the size of basketball, was spotted by a camera developed by Australian scientists.

Researchers are excited to have caught it on underwater camera for the first time in the Southern Ocean off Antarctica.

Originally developed by the Australian Antarctic Division for commercial use in long-line fishing, the underwater camera technology that captured the marine invertebrate is being used by the division to collect data for the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), an worldwide commission that focuses on conserving Antarctic marine life.

Enypniastes eximia has only been seen in the Gulf of Mexico previously and was captured in the Southern Ocean by cameras developed by the Australian Antarctic Division.

"Most importantly, the cameras are providing important information about areas of sea floor that can withstand this type of fishing, and sensitive areas that should be avoided". The data collected by the division will be presented at the annual CCAMLR meeting in Hobart, Tasmania that begins Monday and will continue through November 2.

"We will also support two other new Marine Protected Areas being proposed this year which will contribute to CCAMLR's commitment of a representative system of MPAs in the Southern Ocean".

These proposals are among a number of measures Australia will put forward during the 10-day meeting, including proposals to improve the way CCAMLR responds to the impacts of climate change.
