Poland's ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party was poised to make big electoral gains on Sunday as an exit poll put the euroskeptic conservatives ahead of the opposition in regional elections across the country.

The vote will also measure the strength of the opposition, which is centered on the pro-EU Civic Platform party that governed Poland for eight years before Law and Justice came to power in 2015.

The early results put PiS on track to gain an absolute majority in several regional parliaments in Poland, making it easier to push through government-approved legislation.

Nationwide turnout was 51.3 percent, higher than in 2014, according to the exit poll, which questioned voters as they were leaving the polling stations in 1,160 locations across Poland. Full official results are expected late Tuesday or Wednesday. Should the result be confirmed, Trzaskowski would win the race outright and would not have to take part in a runoff.

While exit poll results cannot give a clear indication of how many of Poland's 16 provincial assemblies will fall under PiS control, any gains will mean better access to local funding.

The Ispos survey says that Rafal Trzaskowski, a former European lawmaker, garnered 51.4 percent support and will become Warsaw mayor without having to take part in a November 4 runoff. Although the party has held an absolute majority on a national level since 2015, some of the government's policies have sparked mass protests and drawn European Union criticism.
