Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook told online news website BuzzFeed on Friday that Bloomberg should retract the story. According to the story, the spy chips were spotted by Apple and Amazon, yet both companies have strenuously insisted no such thing ever happened. "@tim_cook is right", Jassy said, also stating, "Bloomberg should retract".

Bloomberg said in its report that some 30 companies and multiple U.S. government agencies were targeted by the chips, which would give Beijing secret access to internal networks. San Jose, California-based Supermicro's motherboards were at the centre of the malware chip allegations.

Bloomberg had reported that a unit of the Chinese People's Liberation Army infiltrated the supply chain of computer hardware maker Super Micro Computer Inc to plant malicious chips that could be used to steal corporate and government secrets. "They [Bloomberg] offered no proof, story kept changing, and showed no interest in our answers unless we could validate their theories". Super Micro said it is "confident" that Bloomberg's reports are incorrect, adding that it is nevertheless conducting a "complicated and time-consuming review" of its operations to address the allegations.

Supermicro has said that the design complexity makes it practically impossible to insert a functional, unauthorised component onto a motherboard without it being caught by the checks in its manufacturing and assembly process. The report alleged that more than two dozen United States companies were impacted by the supposed hardware breach, including Amazon and Apple. In its own statement, Amazon AWS had said that it had never found any malicious chips or modified hardware in Elemental servers, challenging a statement in the report claiming Amazon had found breached Super Micro motherboards in a Beijing data center. Meanwhile, security experts - including United Kingdom and USA authorities such as the Department of Homeland Security - have said they had no knowledge of the attacks.
