Police in Zimbabwe have revised the death toll in a bus crash on Wednesday stating that forty-seven people were killed in the incident.

Reports claimed a coach belonging to Bolt Cutter bus company travelling from Mutare to Harare collided with a Smart Express Bus Services coach heading in the opposite direction just outside Rusape.

Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, told NewsDay that the accident involved Smart Express and Bolt Cutter buses and occurred at the 156km peg. Of the 47, 45 are adults while two are children.

Gruesome pictures of the accident site went viral on social media with panicky citizens struggling to ascertain whether they had relatives on the two buses.

Traffic accidents are common in Zimbabwe, where years of underfunding and neglect have left roads riddled with potholes. The highway where the accident occurred, however, had recently been resurfaced.

In June a year ago, 43 people were killed in a bus crash in the north of the country, along the highway leading to neighbouring Zambia.

In July 2015, eight passengers died and 53 others were injured when a tyre burst, causing the bus to overturn.
