A desperate search is under way to find a missing 12-year-old boy after three people he was possibly in a vehicle with were found dead in central Australia.
The bodies of two adults and a child were found late on Wednesday near Willowra, about 300 kilometres northwest of Alice Springs.
The search was set to continue until police were able to completely rule out that there weren't other people in the auto.
A land and air search was carried out on Thursday to attempt to locate the 12-year-old. The three bodies were found about 4.5 kilometres from the vehicle, along with remnants of food and water. They were all from the same family.
Police said the deaths are not being treated as suspicious and ruled out a vehicle crash, but they are investigating whether it was heat-related.
Because of flooding rain and the remoteness of the area, investigators took a few hours to reach the vehicle.
Southern Desert Division Superintendent Jody Nobbs said police were yet to rule out that there may have been more passengers.

This morning, police said a 12-year-old boy, who they believed was with the group, was not found among the dead.
"Ensure that when you travel your vehicle is in a fit state, that you have sufficient supplies including water and a first aid kit, and that someone is aware of what your travel itinerary is, when you intend to leave, arrive and your anticipated routes", he said.
Police are appealing to members within those communities to contact police immediately on 131 444 should they locate or have information on the child's whereabouts.
