FIFA Threatens To Ban European Super League Players From World Cup

The biggest names in football would be banned from the World Cup if they played in a breakaway European Super League, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Wednesday.

Infantino, meanwhile, defended his role in another of the stories revealed by Der Spiegel, which alleged Manchester City struck a secret deal with European football's governing body UEFA in 2014 to avoid a potential Champions League ban for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations. "If there are players who don't play in organised football, they don't play organised football, and that encompasses everything - national leagues, confederation competitions, the Euros and the World Cup".

"This is the history of the last 20 years", said Infantino, who has clashed this year with European football officials and club leaders over FIFA's proposed Club World Cup project, which is funded by Japanese investor SoftBank.

Infantino said the Club World Cup was his answer to any breakaway attempt, presenting it as a competition that would generate more revenues for the clubs but also benefit the soccer community.

A Federation Internationale de Football Association task force will assess a revamp of competitions, including a new event for all national teams played every two years.

He also believes the latest breakaway threat will calm. "I trust certainly the club owners and presidents to be able to have a discussion".

A video went viral on Chinese social media site Weibo in which a male employee was being beaten with a belt. As he was being whipped with a belt by another man, other people stood around him and watched.

Infantino also said the 2022 World Cup must be played in 28 days even if it is expanded to 48 teams and acknowledged that would make it even harder to push through his preferred vision of a bigger tournament.

"You are either in or you are out", the head of the world soccer body told a group of global reporters. We do. It is decided in March, but I am not a prophet and I don't know if it will be approved. But I have a challenge to convince clubs to improve the current World Cup we already have. Can we do it for 2022?

Accommodating another 16 teams would vastly complicate Qatar's task in preparing for the World Cup, which was awarded to the tiny desert state in 2010. "We can not make [the tournament] longer", Infantino said.

The question of regional cooperation has been complicated by Qatar's stand-off with neighbours Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, who have cut off diplomatic relations and imposed a blockade on the resource-rich country, accusing it of endorsing terror activities. "Football unites, builds bridges, that could be a concrete result". What are the chances?

A final decision on that will be made in March at the FIFA Council in Miami before the draws for qualifying are made.
