A new world record was set in the holy city of Ayodhya on the eve of Diwali on Tuesday with over three lakh "diya" or earthen lamps lit up simultaneously on the banks of the Sarayu river, officials said.

South Korean first lady Kim Jung-sook attended the record-breaking event after meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a four-day visit to India.

In 2017, the Uttar Pradesh government missed to break the record by a margin.

A similar attempt failed to break the record a year ago, when strong winds blew over numerous lamps. According to The Economic Times, the previous record was held by Dera Sacha Sauda, which had organised the largest display of 1,50,009 diyas in Sirsa in 2016.

The target was to light 3.35 lakh diyas on both sides of ghats at Ram Ki Paidi in Ayodhya.
