  • Spotify allows Free Tier streaming on Connect-enabled speakers

Those who listen for free haven't had access to Spotify Connect, but that's all about to change with a new update to Spotify's Commercial Partners' SDK.

Spotify Connect is a pretty nifty alternative to things like Bluetooth and AirPlay, but thus far, it's been strictly the domain of Premium users.

While Spotify Premium still offers many features that are only available for paying members, one of those features is making its way to the free tier. Free users will still face several restrictions, including a limit on the number of songs they can skip each hour; free users will still be unable to download music.

You can also find out more about the Spotify Free service and the Spotify Premium subscription benefits and prices on the main Spotify site.

Why it matters: Spotify released a new "eSDK" for integrating Spotify Connect into smart home audio devices in the hopes of getting out to more users.

Any connected hardware partner will now have the opportunity to use eSDK 3 to allow millions of users to enjoy Spotify Free on their Spotify Connect-enabled speakers. "We look forward to supporting our partners over the coming months as they update existing speakers and bring new products to market".
