  • England wing Tommy Makinson crowned 2018 Golden Boot victor

England wing Tommy Makinson has beaten out Kiwis captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to be crowned the 2018 Golden Boot victor.

Australians, given the dominance of the Kangaroos at worldwide level, have generally won the award, with Makinson only the ninth non-Australian to win the Golden Boot in its 34-year history. The 27-year-old the scored a hatrick against the Kiwis last weekend, helping England secure the three-game series with a match to spare.

The St Helens flyer is just the fifth England player to receive the award since 1984 and first since former captain Kevin Sinfield in 2012.

Makinson burst on to the global stage in May when he came off the bench to score a try in England's win over New Zealand in the mid-season Denver test at Mile High Stadium.

Makinson received the award at a ceremony in Leeds on Wednesday alongside the first victor of the women's Golden Boot - the Sydney Roosters and Australia centre, Isabelle Kelly.

The selection panel, which was comprised of members of the rugby league media on both sides of the world, cited the "spectacular way in which both players have adapted to the rigours of the worldwide game".

Kelly backed up her 2017 World Cup final-winning performance with a two-try haul in the Jillaroos' narrow victory over the New Zealand Ferns in October. Kelly was nominated alongside teammates Ali Brigginshaw and Brittany Breayley, while New Zealand's Honey Hireme and England's Georgia Roche - the first victor of the Woman of Steel award - were also nominated.
