Korean fans believe that TV Asahi's decision to "postpone" BTS's appearance was a strictly political move, as now, Korea and Japan are facing political friction.

The offending shirt featured the phrase "PATRIOTISM OURHISTORY LIBERATION KOREA" repeated multiple times alongside an image of an atomic bomb explosion and another of Koreans celebrating liberation.

Japan, meanwhile, became the only nation to have experienced a nuclear attack when the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagaski killing an estimated 200,000-plus people at the end of WWII.

The seven-member boy band, who have built a huge global following since they formed in 2013, were due to appear on TV Asahi's flagship Music Station show on Friday evening. The station said in a statement it chose not to feature BTS after speaking with the record company about why BTS band member Jimin had chosen to wear the shirt.

"We apologize for conveying this unfortunate news to the fans who were looking forward to it", the agency stated.

"The T-shirt that one of the members wore made headlines and became controversial", TV Asahi explained in a statement announcing the cancelled performance.

The two countries have strained relations due to Japan's occupation of the Korean Peninsula in the early 20th century until the end of the Second World War.

Jimin, 23, was reportedly photographed wearing the shirt a year ago on 15 August, when Koreans mark the anniversary of the end of the Japanese occupation. Despite IZ*ONE's successful debut stage on KBS's ' Music Bank' last week, some netizens are still petitioning the girl group's promotions on the station; the government petition demanding a ban on IZ*ONE from appearing on public broadcast station programs now has approximately 30,000 signatures.
