  • Boeing jet crash-lands at Guyana airport 6 people injured

Fly Jamaica Airways was certified by the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) in September 2012, and was cleared to operate in the United States by U.S. authorities in December.

It says the Boeing 757 aircraft with 118 adults and two infants on board was forced to return to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport minutes after departing for Canada because of technical difficulties and overran the airstrip.

A Boeing jetliner carrying 126 people crash-landed at the airport in Guyana's capital Georgetown on Friday, injuring six people, the transport minister said.

The injured received treatment at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.

The Fly Jamaica plane, bound for Toronto, suffered a hydraulic problem ten minutes after taking off from Georgetown airport at 2.10am and had to turn back.

As such, preparations were made for an emergency landing but the Pilot was unable to get the aircraft to an absolute stop before the end of the runway.

The plane crashed into a feance and its front wheel became wedged in a pile of sand that was being used for a runway expansion project.

The passengers included one American, 82 Canadians, 35 Guyanese, one Pakistani and one Trinidadian.

The crew were mad eup of six Guyanese and two Jamaicans, according to Mr Patterson.

The Minister confirmed that the Fly Jamaica flight crashed at the same point where a Caribbean Airlines flight crashed in 2011.

The Airline has since said it is providing local assistance and "will further release information as soon as it is available".

A Guyanese government official is expected to provide an update on the incident at 10 a.m. ET.
