Bunnings sausage sizzle under fire for slippery onions

  • Changes to Bunnings Warehouse sausage sizzle called 'un-Australian' for a safety overhaul

But Bunnings Warehouse chief operating officer Debbie Poole has left some sausage specialists sour over her suggestion to reorder the summer specialty.

A burning question of whether onions go above or under a sausage has sparked a national debate in Australia that has gripped the country, raising tensions not seen since the controversy over whether a hot dog is in fact a sandwich.

Commercial radio stations in New Zealand also seized on the Bunnings sausage story, with More FM stationing a reporter in a auto park with instructions to try and slip on onions.

However when announcing the change to sausage sizzles, Bunnings said in a statement safety was its number one priority.

Sausage sizzle fans everywhere have taken to social media to mock Bunnings after the hardware store revealed its freakish new rule about onions in sangas.

Thousands of groups and charities apply to run sausage sizzles every week and receive every dollar raised at the hotplates.

"Onions can be slippery when they fall out of a sausage sandwich", Bunnings wrote in a flyer distributed to community groups that included instructions for constructing a sandwich.

On social media, the change was met with confusion and mixed reactions.

It says this helps prevent the onion from falling and creating a slip hazard.

The good ol' Bunnings sausage sizzle has to be one of the best and most Aussie things about the weekend, right?

Ms Poole confirmed the serving suggestion extends to New Zealand community groups using Bunnings barbeques this summer.

Others pointed out that the supposed safety measures might actually increase the risk of spillage; the greasy onion might make the bread soggy, possibly even splitting it open.

A new rule issued to all of the hardware giant's 294 stores states that onions must be placed into the bread before the sausage, to stop shoppers from slipping on stray onions.

You might say they've hit a snag.

. People of all ages do this, it's part of our Australian life that we support local community organizations. "Frankly I'm not going to give them any recipe hints".

This week, an iconic sandwich known as the Bunnings sausage sizzle - so called as it is served at fundraisers hosted by Australian hardware chain Bunnings Warehouse - underwent something of a makeover.

The news also drew the attention of New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who described it as the "most pressing global or trans-Tasman news of the day".

Morrison concurred, saying: "I agree, I agree".
