How May could get her deal through parliament

  • Eurosceptic ministers join forces to change May's Brexit deal

The prime minister stressed the advantages the deal offers on immigration.

Mrs May took a swipe at party rivals who have threatened to unseat her as leader as she warned the next seven days would be "critical" to achieving a successful Brexit.

The county's MPs have been giving their reaction to the Withdrawal Agreement unveiled by Prime Minister Theresa May last week, with the controversial document receiving a frosty reception.

Previously she had agreed to publish the advice but not the comparison with remaining in the EU.

Despite having lost some members of her Cabinet last week, including Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, May used her speech on Monday to stress that she intends to move ahead on the so-called divorce agreement with the European Union, with plans to head to Brussels later this week to thrash out details of the UK's future relationship with the 27-member economic bloc after Britain has formally left in March 29, 2019.

Barnier said the United Kingdom would have to make appropriate contributions to EU coffers if it were to stay in the bloc's customs union and single market beyond the now envisaged end of the transition at end-2020, 21 months after Brexit. Speaking at the news conference with Barnier, Austria's Gernot Blumel said it was "a fair compromise".

Asked whether she feels embarrassed by the fact that despite her warnings the European Research Group (ERG) failed to spark 48 letters, she suggested it was the male members of the ERG who were hesitant. But facing a motion from 70 MPs across both sides of the benches including many Conservative rebels she was forced to back down and agree to publish the details before parliament votes on the Brexit agreement.

"What it will do is bring in a degree of uncertainty".

She said: "Personally if the prime minister is not going to move any further on this deal, which puts us in a transition period until 2022, with no cap on the monies we have to pay, with no voice at the table, and no representation throughout this entire period".

"What it will do is mean that it is a risk that we delay the negotiations and that is a risk that Brexit gets delayed or frustrated". The Government has insisted there are no plans in place for Border infrastructure.

The DUP leader pointed to remarks by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar that he was "not contemplating" a hard border in the event of a no-deal Brexit as evidence the issue was "only ever a negotiating tactic by the European Union".

He said Ireland needed an "urgent redoubling of Brexit preparations" and he claimed we were not prepared for a no-deal outcome.

CBI president John Allan said that, while Mr Barnier's intentions in proposing an extension may have been constructive, such an announcement "may not be particularly helpful" at this point in time.
