  • Alexa is that you? Amazon exposes user data in mystery breach issues creepy non-explanation

Amazon has suffered a data breach just days before Black Friday - and the company was tight-lipped about whether it had notified the British data protection authorities.

We don't know how it happened, exactly when it happened, or who the information was shared with / to. We also don't know how many users have been impacted by the event.

As BetaNews reports, the email Amazon sent is quite obscure.

As the holiday shopping season kicks into gear, Amazon has disclosed to select customers that their names and email addresses were "inadvertently disclosed" due to a "technical error".

Amazon's United Kingdom press office acknowledged that the email was genuine, saying only: "We have fixed the issue and informed customers who may have been impacted". That leak wasn't caused by a technical error, like this one, but by an Amazon employee who was caught selling customer data, and who Amazon later fired.

It then goes on to say, "The issue has been fixed". In its notifications to customers, the company said that they did not need to change their passwords or "take any other action".

Under the rules, Amazon also "must assess if a breach should be reported to the ICO, or to the equivalent supervisory body if they are not based in the UK", the United Kingdom watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office, said.
