Tech regulation 'inevitable,' Apple CEO says

  • Google best Search engine we keep Safari safe says Tim Cook

Fried continued to press Cook and inquired about why Google - a notorious data collector - was still the primary search engine on Apple's software. In the Recode MSNBC interview, Cook explained why Apple would never use the Facebook model: "We could make a ton of money if we monetized our customers, if our customers were our product".

Yet, when questioned about Apple's relationship with Google - a tech giant with its fair share of privacy scandals, Cook skirted the question. Rather than hypocritical, these statements are in-line with his previous calls for an American version of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). "We come up with ways to help our users through the course of the day".

Cook did call the way Apple relies on Google as "not a flawless thing".

"I think the Valley has been open and accepting to many different people from different walks of life", Cook said, regarding encouraging more gender diversity in tech.

One of those moments came when Fried pressed Apple CEO Tim Cook on how "concerning" it was that platforms like Facebook and Google could still be used on Apple's technology. "Our own information, from the everyday to the deeply personal, is being weaponized against us with military efficiency", Cook said at a conference in Brussels on data privacy.

"I'm a big believer in the free market".

In other words, it seems as though Cook is saying that Google has a host of issues with regards to user tracking and user privacy, but Apple has built controls into iOS and macOS (mainly via Safari) which help to alleviate those concerns.

On Sunday, he told Axios that some level of government regulation over Silicon Valley was inevitable.

But: "We don't have to admit it, if the free market works. I'm actually encouraged at this point that there will be a more marked improvement over time". Let us have a look into the speech and its implications in detail. Cook previously said in an interview that the feature had even surprised him with regards to how long he spent doing certain activities on his phone.
