An already massive recall of ground beef products has now expanded to more than 12 million pounds as of Tuesday, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

What hasn't changed are the production dates for the beef, July 26 through September 7, so there's no concern about beef now on sale.

You can find a link to the recalled products on the sidebar. "267" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

These items were shipped to retail locations and institutions nationwide. Receipts and shopper cards from patients helped investigators identify the source of the outbreak. Specific traceback for three case-patients have identified JBS Tolleson, Inc., EST.

The recalled beef products may be contaminated with salmonella, and this expansion doubles the previous amount recalled.

Consumption of food contaminated with salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses, the USDA said. Symptoms develop between 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated substance and include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. They usually last between four to seven days. Most people can recover without treatment. In some persons, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized.

Those at most risk for severe illness include people with weakened immune systems, babies and elderly individuals.

FSIS said its concerned that consumers may unknowingly have recalled beef in their freezer.

Anyone who has eaten any of the recalled products and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Public health officials say consumers should check their homes for the recalled ground beef and other "non-intact" raw beef.

In addition to throwing away the concerning product, the FSIS urges to always cook raw meat to safe internal temperature to kill any Salmonella.
