Coronation Street star Peter Armitage has sadly died at the age of 78, four years after beating bowel cancer.
His last appearance in the soap was in 2011 and he was also an acclaimed stage actor, appearing in a theatre production of Brassed Off in his hometown several years ago.
His friend and co-star Charlie Lawson, who played Jim McDonald on the show, revealed the news on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.
Tributes for Peter followed after Charlie's announcement from many of his old Coronation Street friends.
Jane Danson wrote: "So sorry to hear this, lovely man. Thoughts to family and friends x".
No cause of death has been given, although four years ago Mr Armitage revealed he was in remission from bowel cancer.

Peter was widely known for playing Bill Webster in the ITV soap, the father of Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell). He told The Mirror: "I've put my life on hold for the past few months, but as soon as the ileostomy is reversed - hopefully next month - I'd love to get back to work again".
The couple later returned to our screens in 2006 when Bill headed back to the cobbles to visit his family, but he began an affair with Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls).
His other acting credits included roles in 1970s BBC drama "The Befrienders" and short-lived David Jason sitcom "Lucky Feller".
In the 1980s, Peter also appeared in a Yellow Pages advert as a father trying to convince his son not to have a racing bike as a birthday present.
Armitage leave behind his two adult children.
