Her body has never been found.

Dawson appeared via video link at Central Local Court on Thursday where his solicitor indicated his defendant will enter a plea of not guilty.

When the magistrate asked if he was Mr Dawson he replied, "yes, yes I am sir".

Macquarie Media Reporter Anthony Laughton was in Southport Arrest Court as Chris Dawson applied for bail, fighting an extradition request from NSW Police.

His lawyer said he would make a formal bail application at a later date.

Mr Dawson spent the night in the Southport watch house on the Gold Coast and left in an unmarked police vehicle just after 5:00am (AEST) before travelling to Sydney on a Qantas flight.

Once back in NSW, detectives will begin the process of charging him with murder before he is brought before a Sydney court.

The Australian's Hedley Thomas who helmed The Teacher's Pet podcast tells Ben Fordham "it's been a very moving period talking to people who were very close to Lyn Dawson".

Lynette Dawson's disappearance in 1982 has been the subject of a popular crime podcast that has highlighted the case across the world.

Ms Dawson was 33 when she went missing in 1982 leaving behind two young daughters.

He maintains he had nothing to do with his wife's disappearance.

Walsh said his client was "anxious and stressed" about the situation, and seemed to be an otherwise reserved man.

Despite the fact Mrs Dawson's body has not been found, NSW Detective Superintendent Scott Cook says investigators are confident in the strength of their case.

The former school teacher was sitting in the back of a auto next to a police officer as he was being driven to the airport, after facing an extradition hearing on Wednesday.

"They were predominately statements from witnesses that helped us tie pieces of the puzzle together", he explained.

Mrs Dawson's niece Renee Simms said the family has been waiting for 36 years for some sort of explanation for her aunt's disappearance.

It is believed the arrest follows new information provided by Dawson's teenage lover at the time, Joanne Curtis.

"We gave each other a big hug. There was a sense of relief, but knowledge that we've got a pretty tough road ahead of us now".

The family were "disappointed" it had taken so long, she said.

"Today is a good day for us", she said.

"I know he would appreciate your support also if you're in the area, or I could pass on your messages to his brother", the post said.

"Mr Dawson was an awesome teacher and that's what I know for sure".
