But the talks instead turned to a diplomatic point between the U.S. and Ecuador: the fate of the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The President of Ecuador spoke with Paul Manafort about his desire to remove Julian Assange from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, a Manafort spokesperson confirmed Monday. Manafort had reportedly traveled to Ecuador in hopes of brokering a deal for China to invest in the South American country's power system, angling for a large commission. However, during the meeting, the topic of the WikiLeaks' founder's extradition came up.

In at least two meetings, however, Moreno and his aides talked about ridding themselves of Assange, who had been staying in an Ecuadorean Embassy in London since 2012. According to the NYT, Manafort suggested he could broker the deal.

The President of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno and his assistants in 2017 was discussed with the former head of the election headquarters of Donald trump Paul Manafort the possibility and ways magazine in the United States founder of the site WikiLeaks Julian Assange. The Times said there was no indication that Trump or other administration officials were briefed by Manafort on the negotiations, but noted the incident highlighted Manafort's role as an worldwide influence broker hoping to cash in on his ties with Trump. Manafort, who is now serving a jail term after pleading guilty to conspiring to defraud the U.S. and conspiring to obstruct justice, was reported to be a prime target of Mueller's investigation immediately after it began. Manafort's spokesperson also specified that "there was no mention of Russian Federation at the meeting' with the Ecuadorian president". Manafort recently dismissed a story that he met with Assange in person during the 2016 campaign as "false and deliberately libelous".

The subject of Assange's asylum status at Ecuador's London Embassy came up on a trip Manafort made to Quito in May 2017, three sources told the Times.

Assange and Wikileaks are also players in the investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
