  • Report Former Chelsea CEO Peter Kenyon in Newcastle takeover talks

Following on from Newcastle owner Mike Ashley's announcement that he was looking to sell the club "before the January transfer window", it has emerged that a consortium led by ex-Manchester United and Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon is a frontrunner to buy the Magpies.

Although it is unknown whether an official bid has been submitted, it is believed that a possible deal with Kenyon and United States financial advisory firm Rockefeller Capital is what Ashley was hinting at.

In a rare television interview, the 54-year-old businessman revealed that negotiations are "at a more progressed stage than they've ever been" but after a proposed takeover from Amanda Staveley collapsed earlier this year, supporters are naturally sceptical.

He is keen to finally offload the club at the third time of asking after a turbulent 11-and-a-half years on Tyneside which has seen him at odds with large sections of the Toon Army for much of his time in charge.

Newcastle got off to a dismal start to the season, only for a three-game winning run in November to allow them to drag themselves out of the relegation zone.

"For us, we have experience of this. For us, it is really business as usual".

"Our plans are to look for the (transfer) targets".

Now, with the January window approaching, Benitez says he and managing director Lee Charnley are busy working on potential targets who can help the club strengthen.
