Tiger Woods keen to be playing captain at Presidents Cup

Tiger Woods will resist calls to have his players prepare for next year's Presidents Cup at the Australian Open.

While International captain Ernie Els says he wants his team to be playing at the Open, Woods is certain to attract his U.S. players to the Bahamas and is intent only on ensuring they are ready to fire when they arrive in Melbourne. Woods was on the American team in 1998, when the Internationals logged their lone team win to date, and again in 2011 when the Americans triumphed in Oz.

For that reason his tournament may finish on the Saturday instead of Sunday to allow more time for practice after the trip to Royal Melbourne that week.

Tiger Woods said on Thursday he was keen to be a playing captain at next year's Presidents Cup, and he will draw on his recent Ryder Cup experience to help him out. The flight from the islands to Australia is one he hopes many top Americans will make next year, although he admitted there are "some logistical things" to work out to ensure a smooth transition between the events, which are expected to play back-to-back.

"We'll see what happens".

'We've got (to) try and get the best field we can at the (World Challenge), as well as getting everyone here from the Bahamas to this tournament, get them rested, getting them prepared and getting them ready to play and compete'.

"Being a vice-captain the last couple years, you realise you really don't control the play".

The only time in the 24-year Presidents Cup history that the USA team has tasted defeat was at Royal Melbourne back in 1998. "The Internationals came out ready, prepared to play, and they drummed us".

He made his Cup debut at Royal Melbourne in 1998 - the only edition the Internationals have won.

Today he did the rounds of the morning television programs and radio shows before a full-scale media conference in the open air beside the Yarra River, where accreditation was required - a rarity for a mere interview opportunity.

The former long-time world No.1 is travelling with his partner, Erica Herman, and his two children but is having a rest from playing after a ground-breaking season on the US PGA Tour where he won for the first time in five years and after four back operations.

With his resurgence as a player he is now likely to play at Royal Melbourne next year, although to automatically qualify he needs to be in the top eight on the Tour's points listing at the end of the 2018-19 season. Both teams will have eight qualifiers and four captain's picks, with the USA likely to feature superstars Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and three-time Major champion Brooks Koepka. "We'll have our top eight guys, and hopefully I'll be part of the top eight", he said in Melbourne where he is scouting out the course layout.

"If I'm not (a qualifier), it's up to myself, the vice captains and the players (to determine) who we round out the team with", Woods said.

'I don't know if I'll be a part of that conversation either way, as a player, but as a captain, yeah, I'll be a part of it'.
