Trump EPA to strike blow against climate rules, reports say

  • The Coal Industry Is At Its Lowest Point Since 1979

The report contradicts President Donald Trump, who claimed previous year that the USA "coal industry is back".

Coal consumption is at its lowest level since 1979, according to a report released Tuesday by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

While coal consumption is still popular with the country's electrical grid, it's facing stiff competition from more affordable alternatives.

According to anonymous sources speaking to The New York Times, the EPA will announce a rollback of this rule on Thursday, effectively making it possible for energy companies to build new coal plants that emit up to 1,900 pounds of CO 2 per MWh, which is more in-line with emissions from modern coal plants without carbon capture. Tougher pollution rules are also causing coal to lose some market shares.

"Coal use is at its lowest level in almost four decades and the Trump administration can't stop this country from continuing to move beyond coal", said Mary Anne Hitt, senior director of Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign.

Federal government figures continue to show otherwise, however, as market forces inexorably tamp down coal demand.

Only one, relatively small, new coal-fired generator is expected to come online by the end of 2019, the EIA said.

Trump has attempted to help the coal industry through policy efforts.

Natural gas and renewable energy, including wind and solar power, are climbing. They often referred to it as a "war on coal".

Pizarchik, now a consultant on water quality and reforestation, said lower prices for natural gas and renewables will continue to drive down demand for coal, despite deregulation efforts by the Trump administration.

Ironically, the new tax law approved by the Republican-controlled Congress has encouraged coal plants to close, as utilities use a provision that allows them to accelerate depreciation costs for closing plants, he said. The Energy Information Administration wrote that coal consumption by the USA grid will end down 4 percent this year.

National gas production in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia has jumped from 2 percent of the nation's total in 2008 to 27 percent previous year, Perry said.
