Bryce Harper, Nationals no longer negotiating, owner says

  • Inside Patrick Corbin’s courting and the world of the newest member of the Nationals

Nationals managing principal owner Mark Lerner spoke with a finality not previously heard from Nats officials about free agent slugger Bryce Harper. "We've stated our case". We'll always have great memories of that. Washington wooed Corbin with a hefty and potentially misguided 6-year, 140 million dollar contract that the Bombers were not willing to offer. General manager Mike Rizzo, though, insisted today the two aren't connected and that he has merely been addressing his team's biggest roster holes so far this winter while still allowing for the possibility Harper could return.

"We don't want to do anything short-sighted at this point - anything that's [going to be] a short-term Band-Aid, so to speak, and potentially put us in a hard situation for the long term when, in fact, we are then in a position to contend on an annual basis", Hahn said. "Harp is a big part of our family, and we'd love to have him back".

The Harper issue hangs over all of baseball as the winter meetings are set to begin Monday in Las Vegas, but it's not as though the Nationals have been waiting around to see how it's resolved.

No timeline has been given on when Harper is expected to sign with a team.

Boris Johnson brought to book on earnings
Boris Johnson was ordered to apologize to the House of Commons over the late declaration of nearly £53,000 in income. It appears that he did not arrange that until after I had begun my inquiry".

In an interview with Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier on 106.7 The Fan, Lerner was asked if the offer the Nats made to Harper was the only offer they would make, or if there's still room to negotiate.

"It very well may be", Lerner told the duo. But I really don't expect him to come back at this point. "I think they've chose to move on. That's just not Mr. Boras' M.O.to leave money on the table". If he comes back, it's a strong possibility that we won't be able to make it work.

"We couldn't be fonder of the two of them, Kayla and Bryce", Lerner noted of Harper and his wife. "I really do. We've gone about this business of creating a roster for 2019, and at the end of the day, we'll figure out whether that includes "Harp" or not", Rizzo said. "I get the feeling the Sox are very anxious to get some fan attention - help get people in the seats". "He's an awesome young man, and it was an honor to have him here".
