  • Nissan to recall over 1 lakh vehicles in Japan over improper final inspections

Nissan plans to conduct another recall owing to "improper" tests on new vehicles, a newspaper said Thursday, dealing a fresh blow to the Japanese auto giant following the shock arrest of former chairman Carlos Ghosn.

The automaker said via a press statement that it had found several non-conformities that may have caused inaccurate pass/fail judgments during the inspection process, which were related to brakes, the steering and speed-related measurements. It was reported that several employees admitted to the regulators that they had not been following protocol in tests.

Nissan's Vice President Seiji Honda said that a recall will be issued next week and measures will be taken to prevent such irregularities, reported AP.

Nissan plans to make an announcement on the case later this month and is considering recalling any vehicles improperly tested, it added.

Since October previous year, Nissan has recalled more than 1 million vehicles in Japan because of improper inspections.

Ghosn was arrested for allegedly conspiring to understate his income by about half of the actual 10 billion yen ($88.66 million) over five years from 2010.

Prosecutors in Tokyo will soon hand down indictments for Ghosn, former Nissan director Greg Kelly and the automaker itself, Reuters reports, citing a report in Japan's Nikkei business daily.

Japanese authorities have already arrested Ghosn and Kelly, and their 22-day detention period ends Monday.

The newspaper said prosecutors had decided that Nissan was also responsible for the alleged financial wrong-doing and would bring charges against the firm.

But since his shock arrest, he has been removed from the boards of Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors.
