  • Camp Fire Paradise area

Five large wildfires over the past 14 months, with November's Camp fire the most devastating, have destroyed almost 21,000 homes across six counties.

Authorities said 11 people are still unaccounted for in the deadliest USA wildfire in at least a century.

Officials said that the hospital will reopen but they have not said when that will happen.

The Camp Fire swept through the area about 140 miles northeast of San Francisco on November 8.

A week and a half after overcoming forest fires in California in the deserted town of Paradise Wednesday, 5 December, began returning residents.

Rogers believes she found the remains of Christensen's cat, Marble, under what used to be her friend's bed.

Rogers, who lives in nearby Chico, was in tears as she collected the cat's remains and said she would bury the cat for her friend, Jennifer Christensen, in the front yard.

"We didn't own expensive things, but we had a lot of memory things", she said, recalling Christmas ornaments made by her son when he was a child and mementos from her Canadian husband's great-grandmother.

Christensen said she is not sure of her future plans but feels so much loyalty for her town that recently she got a tattoo that reads, "Love is thicker than smoke", and below that on her arm: "Paradise Strong".

Northern California's recent wildfires have burned homes at a greater pace than developers are building them, deepening a housing shortage that already has left millions struggling to find affordable places to live.

Some residents are being allowed to return almost a month after the blaze swept through the area, killing at least 85 people and destroying about 14,000 homes.

Almost four weeks after the devastating blaze levelled her town, Jennifer Christensen was allowed back to return to her home in Paradise, where the first thing she saw was her son's charred tricycle in the front yard.

There will be limited access to residents on Wednesday, but the same neighborhoods will be opened to anyone on Thursday.

The sheriff's office did not provide guidance for when all town residents will be allowed back to their homes.

More than 50,000 people in the town and two neighboring communities were forced to flee the wind-driven flames that charred 240 square miles (622 square kilometers).
