Zuckerberg defends Facebook in new data breach controversy

Internal Facebook documents released by a British parliamentary committee offer the clearest evidence yet that the social network has used its enormous trove of user data as a competitive weapon, often in ways created to keep its users in the dark.

250 pages of Facebook documents were yesterday published by a British parliamentary committee that investigated if the social media giant manipulated the results of elections.

Facebook knew that the changes to its policies on the Android mobile phone system, which enabled the Facebook app to collect a record of calls and texts sent by the user would be controversial. It added that Mark Zuckerberg personally reviewed the list of competitors, and either he or another senior executive had to personally sign off any further access to data these companies might want.

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg refused to testify in the United Kingdom but appeared before the US House Energy and Commerce Committee.

"These kinds of schemes are exactly why companies must be required to disclose exactly how they are collecting and sharing our data, with stiff penalties for companies that lie about it", Sen.

"It is not clear that there was any user consent for this", Collins said of the whitelisting, in a statement.

Facebook called the documents misleading and said the information they contain is "only part of the story". "Like any business, we had many of internal conversations about the various ways we could build a sustainable business model for our platform". Facebook has insisted that it has never sold user data - but one of the revelations from the documents is that the company discussed the possibility of charging for access to it. "Of course, we don't let everyone develop on our platform", he wrote. That's healthy given the vast number of people who use our services around the world, and it is right that we are constantly asked to explain what we do.

The emails were part of a lawsuit brought by app developer Six4Three against Facebook for cutting its access to Facebook user data. The documents remain under court seal in the US.

Facebook has been accused of striking secret deals with app developers to allow them access to user data and mining user devices to information about third-party app use. "We don't feel we have had straight answers from Facebook on these important issues, which is why we are releasing the documents". Mr Zuckerberg wrote in response to a lengthy e-mail from a lieutenant.

"UK documents suggest Facebook traded user privacy for growth", "Facebook used people's data to favor certain partners and punish rivals, documents show", Collins said in separate tweets Wednesday.

Facebook said that users were asked to opt-in to sharing data about their call and text logs.

Yul Kwon, now Director of Product Management at Facebook replied in an email explaining how the growth team hoped to hide the change from Facebook users on Android. During the summer, the FTC, SEC and FBI joined a Department of Justice investigation into Facebook's sharing of data about 71 million Americans with political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, The Washington Post reported.

Whether or not the executives of Facebook followed up on the order as yet remains unclear.

The emails that have provided this information were obtained by a British Government investigation panel that is probing Facebook for other violations of data privacy, and show that Zuckerberg had questioned whether this data being shared was benefiting Facebook properly. Facebook had allowed Vine users to find other friends through Facebook, but made a decision to cut off Vine's access to that source of data. "We're prepared reactive PR".

The documents also suggest robust internal discussions about linking data to revenue.
