The well-attended rally just days ahead of the winter session of Parliament on Tuesday, was accompanied by a social media buzz with many sharing pictures and videos on Twitter.

Speaking at a VHP rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, the RSS executive head said, "Those in power today had promised to construct a Ram temple". Without naming the BJP, Joshi said that people are not begging for it, the ruling party should listen to people's demand and construct the Ram temple immediately. They are aware of the sentiments. We are expressing our emotions. He added that the rally will deliver the message to those in power that the country wants "Ram Rajya".

"Wahan pe bhavya Ram mandir immediately, turant aur bina kisi deri ke bannna chahiye (There, a grand Ram temple should be built immediately and without any delay)", the BJP chief said in response to a question during an event organised by the Dainik Jagran media group in Delhi.

Shah skipped any mention of the Ayodhya land dispute pending before the Supreme Court and asserted that a Ram temple should be built "immediately".

The Supreme Court is now hearing a batch of pleas on the subject and has deferred its next hearing until January.

But as the dispute has remained unresolved for more than 25 years, right-wing groups are demanding that the Union government sidestep the courts and go ahead with the temple building. Also, terming the demand for a Ram temple an election issue is wrong.

Chaos broke out at the grounds outside the iconic Red Fort today as thousands of people tried to enter the Ramlila grounds.

Some rowdy VHP cadres chanted anti-Muslim and anti-Pakistan slogans in front of the Muslim locality of Turkman Gate, but the police made sure the crowds didn't linger there for long. A cordon of policemen could be seen physically holding the doors together.

Hindus want the government to introduce a legislation to pave the way for a temple, said Sharad Sharma, spokesman for the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), a group that organised the rally and has close ties with the BJP. Reports say the VHP has brought in people from Meerut, Bhagpat, Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad.

The hardline VHP has applied pressure on Modi in recent weeks, staging a huge show of force in Ayodhya itself last month.

Trident-waving devotees clad in saffron filled a huge parade ground in the Indian capital under tight security, where speakers warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi they would not let up until the temple was sanctioned. The next rally will be held in Ahmedabad.
