Brexit: Critics urge renegotiation as ministers say vote 'going ahead'

"When I say if this deal does not pass we would truly be in uncharted waters, I hope people understand this is what I genuinely believe and fear could happen", she said. "The risk is that we don't have Brexit or we don't have a deal".

"The proposed withdrawal agreement is a awful deal under which we won't take back control of our money, laws and trade".

"Do not underestimate how much I care about this because this is fundamental to our country and it absolutely breaks my heart to think that -after all that we fought for, all that we campaigned for, all that (Brexit Secretary) Steve Barclay campaigned for, everybody believes in - we should consign ourselves to a future in which the European Union effectively rules us in many respects and yet we have no say round the table in Brussels".

The House of Commons is due to vote on Mrs May's deal tomorrow, though senior Government figures are pushing for the Prime Minister to postpone. I believe Jeremy Corbyn getting his hands on power is a risk we can not afford to take'.

Writing in today's News Letter Secretary of State Karen Bradley said: "This government has an overriding duty - not just to deliver on the referendum result, but also to do so in ways that keep our United Kingdom united".

Now the agreement looks unlikely to pass Parliament, with dozens of Conservative backbenchers and the Tories DUP allies vowing to join opposition parties in voting it down.

With many saying the Brexit has left too many questions unanswered, there are growing calls for a second referendum.

Other ministers - including Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd - have suggested that a Norway-plus deal keeping the United Kingdom in the single market and a customs union could be a "plausible" alternative if Mrs May's plan is rejected.

Mr Johnson pointedly refused to rule out challenging Mrs May, although he insisted it was "nonsense" to suggest he was already lining up members of his Cabinet.

"My understanding is that we will have a vote on Tuesday and that we are looking to win that vote", he told Sky's Sophy Ridge on Sunday.

New elections or a conservative revolt against the government could also lead to Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party coming to power, May warned.

"I think one or two people might leave, I don't know who they will be", he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Pienaar's Politics.

Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell yesterday told The Mail on Sunday: 'We'll judge when we see what happens on Tuesday'.

Labour is considering its options if Mrs May is defeated and would hold talks with other opposition parties about how to proceed.

Former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab refused to rule out a leadership bid, relling Sky News he would not "get sucked into that debate".
