China says US should withdraw arrest warrant for Huawei executive

10 Décembre, 2018, 10:10 | Auteur: Auguste Feret

Meng's arrest was on the same day that US President Donald Trump met in Argentina with China's Xi Jinping to look for ways to resolve an escalating trade war between the world's two largest economies.

According to the U.S. Justice Department and the United States Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of New York, Meng has used seven passports from China and Hong Kong in the last 11 years to enter the United States.

The US has pressured European countries and other allies to limit use of its technology, warning they could be opening themselves up to surveillance and theft of information. The arrest has alarmed global markets amid worries it could torpedo possible thawing of trade tensions between the U.S. and China. The announcement came amid fears China could detail Canadians in retaliation.

On Saturday, China's foreign ministry summoned Canada's ambassador in Beijing and called on Canada to immediately release Meng, warning otherwise it would face consequences.

The Xinhua report quoted Mr Le as calling Ms Meng's detention "extremely egregious" and demanded the United States vacate an order for her arrest.

Relations between the U.S. and China had seemed to improve last week at the G-20 summit in Argentina, where President Donald Trump announced he had reached an important agreement with President Xi Jinping.

The U.S.is seeking to have Meng extradited on allegations that she tried to evade American trade sanctions against Iran. It also says that Meng and Huawei misled American banks about its business dealings in Iran. The Chinese government has warned Canada that if Meng is not released, the country will face "grave consequences".

The Canadian government is undergoing a review of whether Huawei poses a risk.

"The Chinese side firmly opposes this and strongly urges the United States to attach great importance to China's solemn and just position", it said.

The statement warned that Beijing would make an unspecified "further response" in light of the USA actions.

Meng is wanted in the US for allegedly using an unofficial company called Skycom to access the Iranian market between 2009 and 2014, which would be in violation of USA sanctions.

China has summoned the USA ambassador to protest the detention of an executive of electronics giant Huawei in Canada at Washington's behest. Meng has contended that Huawei sold Skycom in 2009.

In urging the court to reject Meng's bail request, Gibb-Carsley said the Huawei executive had vast resources and a strong incentive to bolt: She's facing fraud charges in the United States that could put her in prison for 30 years.

"Le Yucheng pointed out that the US side has seriously violated the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens, and the nature of the violation is extremely bad", the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Earlier, Chinese state press Xinhua released a new statement which reiterated Beijing's demand that Meng be released on bond, also saying she suffers "high-blood pressure, sleeping disorders, and is still in recovery from a neck surgery in May", and has been unable to get the "necessary humanitarian accommodation" for these problems from Canada.

Huawei said Friday that it would "continue to follow the bail hearing", expressing "every confidence that the Canadian and USA legal systems will reach the right conclusion". A Huawei spokesman said on Friday the company has "every confidence that the Canadian and USA legal systems will reach the right conclusion". The party also takes the lead in prosecutions of those accused of corruption or other crimes in a highly opaque process, without supervision from the court system or independent bodies.
