  • Lee Smith, Harold Baines elected to baseball's Hall of Fame

Baines joins Ken Griffey Jr. and Chipper Jones as the only No. 1 overall draft picks to be elected to the Hall of Fame.

A year later, the Today's Game Committee might have surpassed that in terms of surprise, and maybe even controversy, by electing Harold Baines into the Hall of Fame with the necessary 12 votes from the 16-person committee. Twelve votes were needed for induction.

Baines, 59, played 22 seasons in the big leagues. The other nine on the ballot were players with Johnson, Manuel, and Piniella also having managerial careers. He was a career.289/.356/.465 hitter with 2,866 hits and 384 home runs to his name.

"I'm glad he was on that committee this year to help to get into the Hall of Fame", Baines said.

A seven-time All-Star, Smith finished in the top five in Cy Young Award voting three times, including a second-place finish in 1991 as a member of the Cardinals. Smith retired with 478 saves - he became baseball's all-time saves leader in April 1993 and held the title until Trevor Hoffman broke his record in September 2006 - and a career 3.03 ERA in 1,289 1/3 innings. If Baines was a prototypical DH, then Smith might have been the prototypical example of a closer-for-hire, pitching for eight different teams over his career, often in short stints apart from spending his first eight years with the Cubs. The Today's Game Era committee considers candidates who made their mark on the game between 1988 and now.

That means there's just one more dose of Doctor Who left before the long hiatus, the New Year's Day Special episode "Resolutions". Series eleven came to an end on Sunday evening, with the Doctor answering distress calls from a battle-scarred planet.

Lee Smith is one of the newest members of the Hall of Fame. Selected by the White Sox in 1977 out of St. Michael's High School in Easton, Maryland, Baines quickly emerged as a threatening left-handed bat, hitting 25 homers and picking up MVP votes as a 23-year-old in 1982, his third Major League season. He and Baines are only the third and fourth living former players voted into the Hall of Fame by the eras committees, joining former Tigers teammates Alan Trammell and Jack Morris, who were voted in by the Modern Game Committee past year.

Modern Era (1970-87): Meets again in 2019.

But more than a few fans were throwing tirades reminiscent of Piniella's memorable and entertaining outbursts at umpires on Sunday night after he fell just one vote short of induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Today's Game Era Committee.

Early Baseball (1887-1949): Meets next in 2020.
