  • Retiring from two Majors over one year is tough says Rafael Nadal

World No. 2 Rafael Nadal will focus on getting fit for the Australian Open after pulling out of the Brisbane International with a thigh strain.

"It's unfortunate", de Minaur said of the Nadal withdrawal.

"My hope is to win the Australian Open", he said.

"So it will be not fair if I only talk about the injuries, no, because I had the chance to create a lot of opportunities to enjoy, a lot of opportunities to play in front of the best crowds of the world and to achieve much more than what I have dreamed".

"I want to feel myself competitive every week that I am on court and I want to keep fighting for the things that really make me feel alive, you know, for the things that motivate me. And I feel myself with very high motivation to compete and to play".

"I still wanted to play", Nadal told reporters on Wednesday.

"But as I said, I don't want to make step backs".

"I can't do my 100 percent".

Taro Daniel, a lucky loser from qualifying, will take Nadal's place in the Brisbane International draw and will play Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.

The 17-time grand slam champion was due to play his opening Brisbane clash on Thursday - his first ATP tournament match since pulling out of the U.S. Open semifinals in September with an ongoing knee complaint.

While he had a restricted 2018, he still won five tournaments including a record-extending 11th French Open title and made the Wimbledon and US Open semis.

With that kind of success, he said, he chose to focus on quality performances rather than quantity of matches and that means not playing with niggling injuries.

"That's why I am here", said the Spaniard.

"So I will not (chase) the number one because it's not my main goal".

And that means he plans to go into the first major of the year with only one exhibition match and a Fast4 appearance on top of his training program.

As for the Australian Open, Nadal sees himself in a better position than 12 months ago when he entered the major on the back of just one match in nearly three months due to more knee issues. "After all the things that happened to me, probably I am not ready to assume that waste".

Nadal was limited to nine tournaments a year ago due to a string of injuries which included ankle surgery in November.
